5 steps to market your personal brand online

January – the month to turn over a new leaf and set yourself fresh challenges. One of the most powerful resolutions you can make in 2016 is to actively market your personal brand online. In an age where brands reign supreme, social media is a powerful tool to enhance your personal reputation, extend your reach and communicate with your target markets.

 

So what exactly do we mean by the term “personal brand”?

According to Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, “Your personal brand is what people say about you when you have left the room.” Whereas traditionally, your brand was built from meeting people in person or word of mouth recommendations, social media allows you to develop your personal brand directly through tools such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and blogs.

 

To help you build and manage your personal brand online in 2016, we’ve applied the 5’Ps of marketing (Product, Promotion, Price, Place, Personality) to “brand you”.

 

  1. Product

Your product is what you offer and how you are packaged. Try and sum this up in three words so you can communicate yourself effectively and consistently. Harness the power of LinkedIn by creating a professional picture of yourself that demonstrates your keys skills and strengths. Your LinkedIn profile should show you’re fit for business and will inevitably differ from the picture created on Facebook. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that in the world of social media the line between work and private life can blur – so if you want to post the photos of your Ibiza holiday online try to make sure they reflect the personal brand you are building.

 

  1. Promotion

Promotion or PR is how you can build your point of view online and establish your areas of expertise. Twitter, LinkedIn and blogs are all tools that allow you to join the debate and establish credibility in your chosen field. Online testimonials or recommendations on your website or via LInkedIn allow you to reach an even greater target market.

 

  1. Price / Positioning

More often that not, pricing can be out of your control and this is particularly true online. However, you can use social media to position yourself and your brand. Think about how your behaviour and image online can cheapen or enhance your positioning. Make sure you take the time to carefully communicate any updates, comments or blogs so they are informative and look professional.

 

  1. Place

This is where you are seen online – make sure you maximise the tools available to you in social media. Don’t forget to join relevant industry groups, follow and comment on online publications and blogs. It’s not just about having a presence online – it’s about being active and insightful so you remain visible and in the forefront of people’s minds. Twitter is a powerful tool to position yourself as an expert in your chosen field. But remember once you start tweeting, you need to keep doing it – think of it as a muscle that needs exercising!

 

  1. Personality

Authenticity is vital when building and managing your personal brand. If you position yourself as energetic and enthusiastic – make sure your communicate this in your profiles online. Above all your online presence needs to reflect how it feels to meet you face-to-face. People buy into brands they trust – so your personal brand relies on you communicating authentically and consistently.

 

As with most New Year’s resolutions, building your personal brand is no quick fix and takes time to evolve. However, if you market yourself carefully, you’re sure to reach the right people. Good luck with building Brand You in 2016!
